Life at Heywood Prep

Guy Barrett

Guy Barrett, Headmaster
BSc (Hons), QTS

Heywood Prep’s Headmaster started his teaching career as a Reception class teacher, which, together with his time at a Prep school in Oxford as a Science and Games specialist and most recently Acting Head and Deputy Head at a Gloucestershire prep school, has, he says, ‘provided me with a real sense of perspective, shown me the value of tradition and given me the ability to embrace change’. Guy is a keen sportsman – he plays hockey for Chippenham – and his arrival has heralded a new age of sport at Heywood Prep. During the holidays he likes to spend time doing DIY, helping his father-in-law on his farm and playing the guitar. However, as a new dad to a daughter born in September, spare time is a precious commodity at the moment.

He says: My wife saw the advert when Heywood Prep was looking for a new Head and knew it was the perfect job for me.  I visited the school and quickly realised she was right.  I could see what an exceptional school it was; the Georgian building provides a wonderful setting, every pupil is given every opportunity to shine and there is a real sense of community.

Rebecca Mitchell

Rebecca Mitchell, Deputy Head

Having gained a degree in Geography and Education from Cambridge University, Rebecca taught at Rose Hill Westonbirt for seven years, developing experience across the Foundation Stage, Pre-Prep and Prep. Her interest in travelling and broadening horizons has taken her to India, Thailand and most recently she took her two children to South Africa.  A self confessed "multi-tasker", creative interests include photography and specialist cake making!  With two boys of her own, Rebecca understands the importance of great communication between parents and teachers and is particularly keen to encourage creative thinking and writing, especially for boys.

She says: Heywood Prep is a truly inspiring learning environment, which reminds me of my own prep school, where I spent my very happy formative years.

Fiona Colbridge

Fiona Colbridge, Head of Prep
B.Ed (Hons)

Head of Prep, Year 4 form teacher and famously enthusiastic history teacher, Fiona Colbridge is a Cambridge University graduate, and taught at Stonar School in Wiltshire and Guildford High School before moving back to the West country and Heywood Prep in 2000, her first opportunity to teach boys as well as girls. An art, museum and theatre buff, she is also interested in ecology.

She says: As a keen historian, I really enjoy the historic setting of Heywood Prep and the peacocks from Corsham Court wandering through the grounds are certainly a unique feature of the school!  It is always a great pleasure watching the changing seasons here. I particularly like the special feeling Heywood Prep creates of being part of a community of staff, pupils and parents and the caring, friendly attitude the children show each other across the age groups.

Anna Lawrence

Anna Lawrence, Head of Pre-Prep

After always having a desire to teach, even from a young age, Anna became a teacher at Ivy Lane Primary School in Chippenham.  She taught there for 21 years and taught all ages from reception to year 6, moving through the leadership scale becoming Assistant Head at the school. Her passion, however, lies in teaching within the Early Years. Outside of school life Anna enjoys sports especially swimming and swam competitively for many years. This in turn led to taking up circuit training as a way of keeping fit!  Family life is very important to Anna and she enjoys spending time on holiday with her family, and taking her dog for walks!

She says: The moment I saw the teaching opportunity at Heywood I was excited and inspired.   I am very passionate about teaching reception and get a real sense of pleasure in supporting children begin their life long journey of learning.

Alex Jones

Alex Jones, Head of Nursery
Montessori Nursery Teaching Diploma, NAMCW

Alex Jones is the Head of Nursery, and teaches one group of older nursery children. After training and working as a nanny, she followed this up with a Montessori Nursery Teaching Diploma and ran the nursery at Stonar School for 10 years before moving to the Heywood Nursery. Away from work she spends as much time as possible in the great outdoors, walking and gardening or on the back of a motor bike!

She says: I enjoy the friendly and caring atmosphere at Heywood prep and it gives me great satisfaction to watch the children thrive and flourish in such a beautiful environment and know that I have played a part in that process. Our busy nursery lays the foundations for the children's transition to Heywood Prep.
