  Year 1

Welcome to Year 1

We are looking forward to another exciting and action-packed term at school – the final term in Year 1!

We are excited to be embarking on a new topic, ‘Eric Carle and his Marvellous Minibeasts’. This topic will take us on a journey through the famous stories written and illustrated by Eric Carle that will guide our study of minibeasts. Our topic will be enhanced by a visit from Jonathan’s Jungle Roadshow on Thursday, 27th of April and we will also be visiting Slimbridge Wetlands Centre on Tuesday, 13th of June to participate in workshops linked to minibeasts (further details to follow). Our topic will finish off with a minibeast animation film premier on Wednesday, 28th June at 2pm. Children may bring in a party outfit for this event.

The children will continue to change their reading book (if finished) each morning when they come into school, and will still bring home Maths homework on a Thursday, to be handed in by the following Wednesday. This term topic homework will take on a guided fact file format. The children will need to first choose one minibeast that interests them and then each week they will bring home a blank page for their fact file under the headings; Title page, Body parts, Diet, Life cycle, Family, Behaviour, Habitat, Contents and Glossary. They will then need to research their chosen minibeast using, books, internet, visits etc. To go alongside their fact files we would like the children to make a model of their minibeast. This can be made using any materials from junk modelling to Lego! We would like the projects to be in school during the week beginning Monday 19th June.

This term the timetable will change slightly as the children will no longer be doing swimming lessons but will going to Forest School. This will start on Thursday, 27th of April and will continue on each subsequent Thursday after this. Children will need to bring a pair of named waterproof trousers, t-shirt, leggings/tracksuit bottoms and a pair of named wellingtons to school each Monday. We will do Forest School come rain or shine, so the children must be prepared for all weathers!

We hope that the children have a fabulous final term in Year 1, as we begin to prepare them for the new challenges that Year 2 will bring.

Please see the attached timetables and curriculum for further details of our work in Year 1.
