Meet the Pre-Prep Team

Anna Lawrence

Anna Lawrence, Head of Pre-Prep & Reception Form Tutor

After always having a desire to teach, even from a young age, Anna became a teacher at Ivy Lane Primary School in Chippenham.  She taught there for 21 years and taught all ages from reception to year 6, moving through the leadership scale becoming Assistant Head at the school. Her passion, however, lies in teaching within the Early Years. Outside of school life Anna enjoys sports especially swimming and swam competitively for many years. This in turn led to taking up circuit training as a way of keeping fit!  Family life is very important to Anna and she enjoys spending time on holiday with her family, and taking her dog for walks twice a day!

She says: The moment I saw the teaching opportunity at Heywood I was excited and inspired.  I am very passionate about teaching in one or the Reception classes and gain a real sense of pleasure in supporting children as they begin their life long journey of learning.

Amy Vernon, Reception Form Tutor

Reception class teacher Amy Vernon completed a Bachelor of Education at Plymouth University, and had 5 years teaching experience in Key Stage One at a variety of independent and maintained schools before joining Heywood Prep. During her time in a Reading school, she accompanied a group of sixth form girls to a partnership primary school in Uganda. It was while teaching a class of seventy-plus eager Ugandan children that it came home to her that everyone must be allowed to love learning and that she could help facilitate this.

In her spare time, Miss Vernon loves to be outside walking, exploring Europe on her motorbike, and currently is busy learning to love DIY as she embarks on the challenge of renovating a Victorian cottage.

She says: From my first visit to Heywood Prep, I knew it was the school I had been looking for. Everyone is so welcoming and happy, and there is a real sense of family from the moment you enter the school gates.

Helen Creighton

Helen Creighton, Year 1 Form Tutor
BSc Hons, PGCE

Twin passions of art and wildlife combine in the Year 1 teacher, Helen Creighton, who has the gift of inspiring beautiful creations from children of all artistic abilities. After gaining a Zoology degree at Reading University she worked in environmental education in many interesting places in the UK and illustrated several books before qualifying as a teacher at Warwick University. Working in Coventry, she set up a school nature area, and became science co-ordinator at a small independent school, before returning home to Wiltshire and joining Heywood Prep in 2003. A keen supporter of the RSPB, Wildfowl and Wetlands Trust and the Wiltshire Wildlife Trust, Miss Creighton also enjoys wildlife photography and art, gardening and walking her two collies.

She says: It is good to work in the beautiful environment of the school but I also like the range of activities it provides and particularly enjoy teaching art, which is one of my own interests and seeing the children enthusiastically produce their own creations.

 Lucy Johnson

Lucy Johnson, Year 1 Form Tutor

BEd Hons

Lucy has worked with children for the past 11 years, starting her career working at a nursery in Portsmouth. From there she decided that she would like to further her own education and attended Winchester University where she gained an Honours Degree in Primary Teaching. Lucy’s first teaching post was at Ranvilles Infant School in Fareham where she worked as a reception teacher for two years before moving to Bath in 2015 to be closer to family. Outside of school Lucy loves to cook for family and friends and enjoys a spot of crafting!

She says: When I came for my interview at Heywood I was blown away by the welcoming and enthusiastic atmosphere that greeted me. Since starting in September, I have quickly realised that this ethos runs through the whole school and I am so excited to be a part of such a diverse and enthusiastic team.

Annette Bidgood

Annette Bidgood, Year 2 Form Tutor

After a short and unfulfilling foray into the world of finance and banking, Annette Bidgood decided to ignore her careers advisor, a disenchanted teacher, who tried his hardest to convince her that teaching was not a rewarding profession. She trained as a Primary teacher, teaching within the Swindon and North Wiltshire area until starting at Heywood Prep in 2008, where, she says, she delights daily in proving him wrong! Outside school far-flung destinations call, she professes a guilty pleasure in chick-lit and psychological thrillers, and is a lifelong fan of Liverpool FC.

She says: I chose Heywood Prep first as a parent, falling for the friendly ethos, high teaching standards and the wonderful building and grounds. I even joined the Friends of Heywood as the Secretary! As a parent, I saw that the teachers genuinely cared for the children, striving to achieve the best from each pupil. I now work hard to contribute as both a parent and a teacher, to all areas of the school, especially enjoying the ability to teach Languages (rare at Primary level).

Claire Hill, Year 2 Form Tutor
BSc (Hons) Geography and Music , PGCE

Claire has worked in the independent sector since 2003 and joined us in a temporary capacity at Heywood Prep in January 2017 to cover for unexpected staff illness. As an existing parent she had no trouble getting up to speed with the workings of the school.

She says: I chose Heywood Prep for my children a few years ago and was amazed with how quickly they settled and began to thrive. I am and am delighted to be part of the teaching team this year.
