Fencing Success

Heywood pupils have enjoyed great success in their fencing matches recently.

Over 60 fencers competed in the Pinewood School round of the Wiltshire/Gloucestershire Fencing Challenge competition in late April. Bouts were held in all three weapons – highlights for Heywood included silver for Rebecca in Year 5 & 6 girls foil and also a gold in Year 5 & 6 girls epee. Lily won gold in Year 4 and below girls foil and Thomas won bronze in Year 4 and below boys foil. Well done everyone!

Rebecca (Y5) also participated in the International Challenge Wratislavia Fencing Competition, coming 50th out of 155 competitors. Read on for her report of this exciting experience.

"I went to Challenge Wratislavia, an international fencing tournament in Poland. It took place in Wroclaw, and went on for five days, with more than 2000 fencers from all around the world participating. You can see how big the event is from the photo below. There were many categories, on different days, but I fenced Under-11, Girl’s foil. When the competition started, I had to fence 5 people in the poule round, and if I didn’t score enough hits in that round, I might have got eliminated. I won 3 matches (4:1, 4:0, 4:0), and had enough points to get through to the next round. I won my match there but, lost the match in the next round of 64. That match took place on the number one piste which you can see in one of the photos.  That is where the final of all the competitions are held so it was really cool to fence on that piste.  I came, overall, 50th, out of 155 people. I really enjoyed myself, saw friends from other Wishford schools and would like to do it again next year, perhaps with the England Fencing Team."
