Year 5 & 6 Trip to We The Curious

Travel to We The Curious (formerly @Bristol).

Year 6 enjoyed an evolution and fossils workshop. They learnt to use a hand lense whilst identifying fossils and types of rock. They carried out an investigation on the evolution of the horse from 65 million years ago to the present day. Finally they pretended to be the clipper bird and tried out different beaks to see who would survive on clipper island.

Meanwhile in the lab, year 5 were lighting the Bunsen burners and investigating colourful chemistry. They revised safety in the laboratory whilst seeing what colours iron, sodium chloride, copper sulphate and strontium chloride would make when burned. Using their recent learning on reversible and irreversible changes, they created yellow pigment by carefully mixing lead nitrate and potassium iodide. Finally, they learned about Chemiluminescence with bleach and Luminol. It was an illuminating workshop.

The children had the opportunity to explore the many exhibits either side of lunch.

What the children thought:

"I enjoyed playing with the electrical circuits" Josh "It was amazing to find out how different horses were millions of years ago." Abigail and Shreya ''I really on enjoyed going in a gigantic bubble and watching the rainbow colours " - Liberty

"It was amazing making our own animations!" - Rosie
