Trip to Aerospace Bristol

Years 3, 4 and 5 headed to Aerospace Bristol yesterday as part of their STEAM enrichment programme. Pupils explored the history of flight and were surprised to learn that Bristol has such a rich aerospace history.

The pupils enjoyed a workshop linking sound and speed, investigating vibrations and how shapes, sizes and lengths affect pitch and volume. They considered the sonic boom Concorde’s speed created as it travelled at supersonic speeds over the ocean. In teams, pupils had to trial different materials to insulate the sounds of concord's engines to help protect the flightpaths from noise pollution. We toured Concorde's hangar and even got to walk inside, observing the engines and fuselage, further learning about the effects of friction and heat at supersonic speeds. We will continue to investigate these hidden engineering considerations in vehicles that travel at speed on Earth and beyond to Mars in our STEAM lessons.
