Year 3 Visit the Corinium Museum!

On Thursday, 25th January, Year 3 went to the Corinium Museum in Cirencester to discover about life in Roman Britain.  First we learnt about Roman Cirencester, or Corinium as it was know, and were surprised to be told that it was the second largest Roman city after London or Londinium. We then enjoyed variety of activities, including dressing up as Romano- British people, learning about the food the Romans ate, handling some Roman pottery, designing mosaics and having fun playing the Roman games of tali (knucklebones) and calculi.

The afternoon was spent exploring the museum galleries, looking at the fascinating artefacts on display. We particularly admired the fine model of a Roman soldier on his horse and some beautiful mosaics.  We enjoyed finding out what a typical Roman kitchen would look like and how the Romans heated their homes using a clever system of underfloor heating or hypocaust. There was also the opportunity to write our names using Roman letter tiles and decipher some inscriptions on tombstones. Some children really enjoyed playing a challenging game of tabula.
